Piece by piece, Turtle Island invites you to slow down and spend time with an artwork full of symbolism, and connection. As the mother turtle takes shape at the centre of the puzzle, smaller turtles emerge around her, turning the puzzling experience into a meditation on care, continuity, and the generations that follow us.
Coast Salish mixed media artist Jeannie Chipps of SC’IȺNEW̱ (Beecher Bay) First Nation created the piece as a reflection on Turtle Island—the place we all live and call home—and on our responsibility to protect and support the children who will carry our stories into the future.
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Turtle Island is being released as a Puzzle with a Purpose, supporting XAXE TEṈEW̱ Sacred Land Society and its work to restore matriarchal values and laws to Island Salish lands, peoples, and waters.
There is a beautiful resonance between Jeannie’s imagery and this work. The mother turtle moving forward with the next generation close behind speaks to care, protection, continuity, and responsibility: values that echo XAXE’s matriarchal mission and its work to care for land, culture, and future generations.
